What’s the Deal With Dave Chappelle And Daphne Dorman?

In early July 2019, comedian Daphne Dorman claimed that she had been tricked by Dave Chappelle into selling her story to the media. According to her, she had been tricked into participating in a podcast interview where she discussed her work and activism. Then, after the interview was finished, she claims that Chappelle asked her if he could sell the story to the media anyway. Dorman is a trans and non-binary activist who’s best known for her work with the Anti-Violence Project. She also worked closely with the Human Rights Campaign as a manager and has been vocal about her identity since the beginning of her career. As she explained to the New York Times, she’s been frustrated for many years about the lack of visibility for trans people in the media. Dorman wanted to bring their struggles to the forefront and make sure that they were getting the support that they needed from the public. After she was diagnosed with incurable cancer in 2017, Dorman decided to do one last project that would leave her legacy behind. And so she started working on a book about the intersections between trans identity and violence.

The Culture Shock Podcast Scandal

Dorman asked Chappelle to be a part of the book and interview process, hoping that his profile would help to get her message out even more. She claims that she was upfront about the fact that she was working on a book that would include his identity as a cis man and that he was all for it. However, after the podcast was over, she claims that he tried to sell the story to the media, which would have been a breach of their agreement. In response, Dorman slammed Chappelle, saying that he’d betrayed her and used her story for his own gain. When asked for comment, Chappelle claimed that Dorman had known about the podcast interview and had been aware of what would be discussed during the entire process. The comedian claimed that he had even tried to reach out to her before the interview was published and that she had failed to respond. He added that he had no intentions of profiting from the story and was, in fact, upset that it had been leaked during the interview process.

Why Did Dave Chappelle Sell Daphne Dorman’s Story Without Consent?

As we said above, Chappelle claimed that he had tried to call Dorman before the interview was published and that she had failed to respond. When asked why he published the story regardless, he didn’t provide much of an explanation beyond the fact that he had wanted to include the story in his podcast and hadn’t heard back from Dorman in a timely fashion. He did, however, add that he’d had no intentions of profiting from the story and was upset that it had been leaked. This added fuel to the fire for Dorman and her supporters. They started to question why Chappelle was so desperate to get the interview published before Dorman had had a chance to respond. There were two possible explanations for this: – Chappelle had wanted to publish the story before Dorman had had a chance to respond because he knew that she wouldn’t have wanted him to. – He had published the story before he had even tried to contact her because he assumed that she would refuse to participate. These two scenarios both add up to a breach of trust and a breach of journalistic integrity.

The Interview That Started It All

The interview that started this whole drama was conducted by Chelsea Eberly of the podcast Culture Shock. It was published on May 31st, 2019, and was titled “Activist and Trans Identity Author Daphne Dorman on Surviving the Dark Times and Finding Light.” The interview itself was fairly brief, clocking in at around 40 minutes. It focused on Dorman’s identity and her personal story as a trans woman, as well as her work with the Anti-Violence Project. Eberly’s interview was actually the third that Dorman had done for Culture Shock. She had first appeared on the podcast back in February 2019 for the episode “Trans Identity Author Daphne Dorman on Cis Privilege, Dark Times, and Light.” The second interview ran in April 2019 and was titled “Trans Identity Author Daphne Dorman on How to Be an Ally to the LGBTQ+ Community.” Eberly’s interview was actually the third that Dorman had done for Culture Shock.

Is Dave Chappelle A Culture Vulture?

Since word of the scandal with Dorman came to light, many have accused Chappelle of being a culture vulture. Vulture is a term used to describe someone who profits off of stories and experiences that don’t belong to them. In this case, it’s because Chappelle tried to profit off of Dorman’s story without her consent. This isn’t the first time that Chappelle has been called out for this. In 2018, there were a number of controversies surrounding the comedian’s Netflix specials. Some people accused him of being a culture vulture because he used a variety of identities that didn’t belong to him in order to make his specials more interesting, including stories about trans and non-binary people that were lifted from Dorman’s work.

Why Did He Respond To This In The Way That He Did?

There’s no doubt that the Chappelle-Dorman scandal has been messy and painful for both parties involved. That said, it’s also raised some important issues about consent, identity, and journalism that we need to think about carefully as a society. Unfortunately, Chappelle’s response to the accusations against him hasn’t helped to address any of these issues. Instead, it’s only added more fuel to the fire and created a lot of unnecessary drama that’s threatened to overshadow his work. In his response to Dorman’s allegations, Chappelle has been unapologetic and vague. He’s refused to address any of the issues that Dorman and her supporters have raised and has instead tried to shift the focus onto his own feelings.

Final Thoughts

Chappelle has faced a lot of backlash in the aftermath of this scandal, and it remains to be seen if he’ll be able to recover. This scandal has been messy and painful for both parties involved, and we hope that they’ll be able to find some resolution and closure moving forward. Regardless of whether or not you think that Chappelle should be forgiven or if you think that Dorman’s allegations are fair, it’s important to remember that behind every story is a real human being who’s experiencing pain and trauma. We hope that this incident can serve as a reminder that people’s stories are their own, and we should be sensitive to how we approach and consume them.
